Historical Note:
The Two Cent Piece, first issued in 1864, was America’s first coin to feature the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST.”Introduced during the Civil War and struck only through 1873, it filled a temporary need for small change when coin hoarding was widespread.
By 1867, public demand had diminished and mintages dropped accordingly. The series was quietly discontinued a few years later, making later-date issues like this one important for building complete sets or rounding out type collections.
