Historical Note:
Struck during the final months of the American Civil War, the 1865 Two Cent Piece remains one of the most historically significant U.S. coins of the 19th century. Introduced just one year earlier, the denomination was the first to bear the national motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” which would go on to appear across nearly all American coinage.
The Fancy 5 variety, found only on some 1865 issues, is identified by the curled and decorative appearance of the “5.” This variety arose from the use of hand-punched date dies and remains highly collectible in all grades, particularly with full detail and clear features like this Fine example.
