Description:
Offered here is a 1917 Standing Liberty Quarter, Type 1 (Variety 1), in Fine (F) condition. This early silver quarter is part of the first design subtype, easily identified by the absence of stars below the eagle on the reverse. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this coin is from the short-lived Variety 1 series (1916–early 1917), featuring Liberty with exposed breast and no pedestal date. In circulated Fine condition, this coin still shows solid detail in Liberty’s shield, figure, and legends.

Historical Note:
The Standing Liberty Quarter, introduced in 1916, initially featured a bold and artistic design by Hermon A. MacNeil. The Type 1 / Variety 1 version, used only through early 1917, shows no stars beneath the eagle on the reverse and lacks the pedestal base beneath Liberty’s feet — both features that were added in Variety 2 (mid-1917–1930).
Public objection to Liberty’s exposed breast prompted the redesign later in 1917. According to The Official Red Book, these early quarters are prized for their artistic purity and historical significance, with the 1917 Type 1 being an essential coin in any advanced collection.
We also offer certified and raw examples of Variety 2, pedestal-date coins (1917–1924), and later high-grade silver types. Feel free to browse or inquire.
