Historical Note:
The Washington Quarter was first struck in 1932 to honor the bicentennial of George Washington’s birth and continued in silver until 1964. That year marked the end of traditional 90% silver quarters, as the Mint transitioned to copper-nickel clad coinage in 1965. Repunched mintmark varieties, such as this 1964-D D/D, were created when the mintmark punch was applied multiple times to a working die. Collectors prize these varieties for their visibility and connection to mid-20th-century Mint practices.
