Historical Note

Introduced in 1964 to honor President John F. Kennedy, the Kennedy Half Dollar quickly became one of America's most recognizable coins. The original 1964 issue contained 90% silver, but rising silver prices prompted the U.S. Mint to reduce the silver content to 40% beginning in 1965.

The 40% silver Kennedy Half Dollar continued through 1970, with the final year's coins issued exclusively in collector sets. Beginning in 1971, regular Kennedy Half Dollars were produced in copper-nickel clad composition.
