War Nickels are easily identified by the large mintmark above Monticello on the reverse, marking the wartime silver composition. These circulated examples remain popular with both collectors and silver buyers because they combine historic U.S. coinage with real silver content.

Historical Note

During World War II the U.S. Mint changed the composition of the five-cent coin to conserve nickel for military production. From 1942 to 1945 Jefferson Nickels were struck using a silver alloy, creating the well-known War Nickels. These coins remain one of the most affordable ways to acquire historic U.S. silver coinage.
